Wishing you all a blessed day!
Today, we gather at the historic Vaskaduwa Rajaguru Sri Subhuthi Viharasthanaya for another insightful discussion in the ‘Yativara Esa’ feature of the Satipaṭṭhāna channel’s monthly program series. Our focus revolves around the current challenges faced by our nation and the global Buddhist community.
With profound respect, we extend our gratitude to the Mahā Nāyaka Thero of the Sri Śāsanōdaya Sangha Sabhā of Sri Lanka Amarapura Nikāya, the Chief Incumbent of the Vaskaduwa Rājaguru Sri Subhūti Viharaya and Dipaduttarārāma Mahā Vihāraya, Kotahena, and Mahōpādhyāya of the Pāli and Sanskrit Cultural Exchange Centre, Most Venerable Dr. Mahindawansa Thero, for graciously accepting our invitation.
Most Venerable Dr. Vaskaduwe Mahindawansa Mahā Nāyaka Thero in conversation with Akash Tharuka Perera.
What is your opinion about the prevalence of Buddhism in today’s world and the behaviour of Buddhists?
Expressing gratitude to the Satipaṭṭhāna channel for engaging in this profound discussion, I find it imperative to speak about the state of the world, particularly within the vast expanse of the Buddhist realm. Our world, once seemingly expansive, has now become a closely connected global village. In the realm of Buddhism, there is much to deliberate concerning the existence, journey, and future trajectory of Buddhists. The contemporary Buddhist landscape is navigating through various challenges, yet at its core lies the principle of non-violence. The foundation of Buddhism rests upon the pillars of non-violence, kindness, and compassion. In a world characterized by complexity, dynamism, and accelerated thoughts and actions, Buddhists are called upon to lead with restraint and discipline. Although Buddhism was not as prevalent globally in the past, it has now expanded to numerous countries, both on a large and small scale.
Throughout this expansion, conflicts have arisen, often tied to factors such as racism, nationalism, linguistic differences, and diverse ideologies. Despite these challenges, the journey continues, with the aim of building upon the achievements gained thus far. Buddhism, in this context, emerges as a religion that responds to the demands of the contemporary world. The responsibility to comprehend and embody the essence of Buddhism in today’s context extends beyond the monastic community to include laypeople. Both monks and laypersons alike must recognize Buddhism as a sought-after religion in the present world and strive to align their lives accordingly. In this endeavor, media platforms such as the Satipaṭṭhāna TV channel and the Satipaṭṭhāna quarterly magazine play a significant role. Through valuable ideas shared on these platforms, a profound connection is established between the past and the present, guiding society towards a more enlightened path.
In light of the assertion that Buddhist philosophy is experiencing a swift global embrace as a contemporary trend, the 14th Dalai Lama emerges as a distinctive symbol in the propagation of this philosophy worldwide. Considering your close association with him, how do you perceive his role in representing the Mahā Sangha of Sri Lanka?
His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama stands not only as a revered religious leader but also as the exiled political leader of Tibet, currently residing in India. His extraordinary global influence is attributed not only to his deep philosophical insights but also to the charismatic personality that echoes the way of the Lord Buddha. Reflecting on the Buddha’s life, we recognize the profound impact of His personality, encompassing a compassionate demeanor, graceful presence, and benevolent actions, all contributing to the widespread acceptance of His teachings.
In the contemporary Buddhist world, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama uniquely bears the epithet “Holy One,” a title traditionally reserved for the Pope in Christianity. Unlike leaders in Theravada Buddhist countries, he holds this esteemed position globally. His deep vision, manifested through philosophical wisdom, is complemented by a warm and genuine demeanor that exudes love and kindness. His smile, filled with compassion, transcends cultural and linguistic barriers, captivating hearts worldwide.
While delving into the profound teachings of the Four Noble Truths and the Law of Dependent Origination, His Holiness initially emphasized spreading love, kindness, and compassion. This approach endeared him to people globally, creating a unique connection that garnered millions of followers. The simplicity of his external appearance conceals a profound philosophy that resonates with the core of the Buddha’s teachings. His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, with his universal appeal, brings joy not only to us but to the entire world.
When discussing His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, we encounter a figure deeply attuned to the contemporary world-a dynamic persona engaged with global affairs and devoted to the well-being of all inhabitants of the planet. His profound ideals materialized in December of the preceding year with the initiation of a groundbreaking endeavor specifically tailored for Buddhist monks worldwide. Recognizing the historical origins of Buddhism in both Pāli and Sanskrit, his visionary aspiration is to unite monks traversing the globe in their propagation of Buddhism in these two languages under a single unified banner. This ambitious vision materialized in the form of the Pāli and Sanskrit International Bhikkhu Exchange Programme, inaugurated in Bodh Gaya last December and slated for a five-year trajectory. Numerous revered Trinikaika Mahā Nāyaka Anunāyaka Buddhist monks, including our esteemed Mahā Nāyaka Thero, actively participated in the inauguration. Could you provide a succinct overview of their experiences during this event and shed light on the noble concept driving this initiative?
The encounter with His Holiness the Dalai Lama stands as a pinnacle of fortune and significance in my life. Gaining proximity to His Holiness is a rare privilege, often reserved for those who have reached a certain spiritual echelon. My good fortune, coupled with accumulated merit, granted me this extraordinary opportunity.
In April 2023, the International Buddhist Confederation convened in India, attracting participation from forty countries and around three hundred Buddhist organizations. The summit commenced with Mr. Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, delivering an eloquent speech in the Pāli language, showcasing his profound understanding of Dhamma. Held at the Ashoka Hotel in New Delhi, the summit drew thousands, captivated by Modi’s compelling voice and oratory skills, leaving an indelible impression.
The second day featured His Holiness the Dalai Lama as the chief guest, and I found myself seated next to him-a moment of immense fortune. The Dalai Lama’s global recognition added strength to our connection. As he addressed the summit, a hushed reverence enveloped the venue, with thousands fixated on his every word. Noteworthy was his universal gesture of greeting, arms outstretched, an inclusive warmth that extended even to the smallest child. His palpable affection, as seen in the tender touch of a child’s head, left an indelible mark. Encountering His Holiness the Dalai Lama, with his extraordinary characteristics, akin to the Buddha and Arahants, is an unparalleled privilege, making this moment a unique and cherished experience in my life.
In the notable year of 2022, a significant and momentous occasion transpired when Malwathu and Asgiri Mahā Nāyaka Theros, Anunāyaka Theros, Maha Nayaka Theros representing Trinikaya, and yourself convened at the sacred site of Bodh Gaya to join His Holiness the Dalai Lama in inaugurating the Pali and Sanskrit International Bhikkhu Exchange Programme. Following this ceremonial commencement, a historic and pivotal discussion unfolded between yourself and the Dalai Lama. This dialogue, marked by its historical significance and challenges, left an indelible impact. I am eager to inquire about the invitation extended by Mahā Nāyaka Theros, including yourself, to His Holiness the Dalai Lama to visit Sri Lanka and the manner in which he graciously accepted this invitation?
It was a momentous occasion, graced by the presence of Anunāyaka Thero of Malwatu Mahā Vihāraya representing the Siyam Mahā Nikāya, Mahā Nāyaka Thero of Asgiri Vihāraya, Mahā Nāyaka of Ramanna Maha Nikāya, and myself representing the entire Amarapura Mahā Nikāya. Dr. Damenda Porage, the visionary founder of the Pāli and Sanskrit Cultural Exchange Centre, and his esteemed companion were also in attendance. As I recall, you and the popular movie star Devnaka Porage graced the event with your presence.
During this gathering, a decision was made-a decision with the potential to bring unprecedented honor to our land. Inspired by the idea of extending an invitation to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, we envisioned the prospect of His visit to Sri Lanka. It was a rare privilege to present this invitation, and I distinctly remember the moment I extended it to Him. In response, His eyes gleamed with happiness, a radiance I had never witnessed before. With a nod of affirmation, he promptly accepted the invitation, acknowledging it as a distinctive and special honor. The joy evident in his countenance affirmed the significance of this auspicious invitation.
While your invitation is a source of great joy globally, it has posed a considerable challenge for certain factions within our country. Specifically, during a meeting with the Mahā Nāyaka Thero of Malwatu Vihāraya, a Chinese representative labeled him as a separatist. In light of this egregious statement, we anticipate a thoughtful and responsible response from you on this matter.
His acceptance of the invitation on that momentous day resonated far beyond the event itself. News of the Mahā Nāyaka Theros from Sri Lanka extending such a request to His Holiness the Dalai Lama reverberated like a wave across the globe, captivating the attention of international media. The impact was profound, reaching countless countries through the coverage in India and various global media outlets. Thousands of Buddhists worldwide responded earnestly to the plea, collectively blessing the call for the Dalai Lama to visit Sri Lanka.
The global recognition of this appeal elevated Sri Lanka onto the world stage, prompting discussions and rejoicing worldwide. This outreach was particularly significant at a time when the country faced economic challenges, marked by a severe recession, shortages of essential commodities, and pressing issues such as the scarcity of oil and fertilizer. While these challenges persist, the invitation sparked a global conversation about Sri Lanka, bringing attention to its struggles and aspirations.
In emphasizing the urgency of economic revitalization, it is essential to recall the historical context of Tibet and the Dalai Lama’s leadership. Tibet faced adversity as the Chinese Communists sought to invade. The invaders, cunningly, initially distributed goods and sweets as a deceptive strategy. This tactic, though superficially positive, ultimately paved the way for the Chinese invasion and subsequent devastation of Tibet. The Dalai Lama, foreseeing the impending catastrophe, made the difficult decision to leave Tibet, seeking refuge in India.
The Dalai Lama’s wise leadership in navigating such challenging circumstances is a testament to his dedication to the well-being of his people. The invitation extended to him, while met with enthusiasm globally, also stirred opposition, particularly from China. The Chinese Embassy and certain factions expressed displeasure, labeling the Dalai Lama as a separatist. This allegation is unfounded, as his actions and recognition, including the Nobel Peace Prize, refute any claims of separatism. The Dalai Lama’s visit to Sri Lanka holds the potential to not only rejuvenate the economy but also foster cultural exchange and promote the teachings of compassion and non-violence on a global scale.
The University of Kelaniya hosted its annual academic conference in celebration of the birth anniversary of His Holiness the Dalai Lama this year. However, it came to light that a Chinese representative visited the university with an apparent attempt to intimidate its administration. I would appreciate hearing your perspective on this incident.
The Dalai Lama, being a globally revered monk, faces no inherent obstacles in traveling from one country to another, especially when there are no accusations or serious charges against him. The hesitancy and opposition to his visit seem rooted in apprehensions about how Sri Lanka will receive him, the level of respect accorded to him, and the potential benefits the country might gain through his presence. The anticipation is that the Dalai Lama’s visit could significantly redirect global attention toward Sri Lanka, yielding substantial benefits such as attracting high-profile investors. This prospect appears to be a cause for concern for China, as they fear a shift in strategic dynamics. Their attempt to influence Sri Lanka, exemplified by pressuring the University of Kelaniya, underscores these concerns.
The interference by the Chinese Embassy in the university’s affairs, particularly in preventing a program on the Dalai Lama’s birthday, raises questions about the extent of diplomatic influence. Diplomacy should not extend to the point of dictating activities within esteemed educational institutions like the University of Kelaniya. Ambassadorial privileges, while distinct, should not be employed to intrude into the internal affairs of educational institutions. The autonomy of institutions, especially universities, should be respected, ensuring that decisions regarding programs and events remain within the purview of the respective administrative authorities.
In your view, what are the most formidable challenges currently facing the Buddhist order and society in Sri Lanka?
Indeed, the challenge we face is reminiscent of Tibet’s predicament. While we receive goods, the influence of Chinese Communism is subtly infiltrating our nation. The aid from China, though acknowledged, comes with a hidden cost and it turns into a direct contribution to their cause when we consume the goods they provide. During our country’s economic downturn, it was noteworthy that India took the initiative to offer assistance promptly. In contrast, China, initially hesitant, only extended help after India’s intervention. This strategic approach raises concerns about ulterior motives and the subtle but steady encroachment on Sri Lanka’s land and seas, exemplified by the construction of the port city.
The fear is not merely about economic dependency but the gradual erosion of our cultural and national identity. The Chinese Communist system’s expanding influence poses a threat not only to the Buddhist Order but also to the essence of being Sinhalese and the sovereignty of our nation. The predictions of Sri Lanka becoming a colony of China are unsettlingly materializing, underscoring the need to confront and navigate these challenges with resilience and foresight.
